Thanks for the comment. I was thinking of what the Coens would have made of this material (I really like Blood Simple) and Winterbottom remains a director who interests me a great deal - Cock And Bull Story, Wonderland, 24 Hour Party People in particular are all great films.

Nice one. Brilliant write-up of a fascinating, yet ultimately flawed, adaptation. Even if Winterbottom's unevenness of tone and perspective were intentional it sadly proved ineffectual in conveying the essence of Ford satisfactorily and at times rendered the plot somewhat incoherent.

I concur that the use of soundtrack was inspired (although I failed to pick up on the Spade Cooley reference until you mentioned it) and wish he would have explored such techniques further.

Watching the film I couldn't help but constantly think how much I would love the Coen's to adapt Pop.1280, but seeing as Blood Simple could already be viewed as their take on Thompson I doubt it'll ever come to fruition. Shame.

Nonetheless, Winterbottom remains my favourite British director at the moment and I always look forward to seeing what he does next.
