In the latest episode of Ellroy Reads I look at James Jones’s classic novel From Here to Eternity. I describe how Ellroy discovered the novel at a very young age, and its influence as literary fiction predates Ellroy’s fascination with hardboiled crime fiction. Watch through to the end for a cameo by a (Demon) Dog!

Ok, confession time. I read From Here to Eternity and loved the story. I was 15 and it was the first time I realized that the style of writing was important. I did not care for Jone’s style of writing. It interfered with my enjoyment of the story. Remember I was 15 but it was an important moment for me. I should go back and reread it and see my reaction 50 years later…
Hi Antoinette, you read it at about the same age as Ellroy, which I think is the perfect age of discovery to read about something which is so candid regarding human nature and sexuality. It’s also a great novel to revisit as I discovered on my second reading recently. Let me know what you think if you go back to it. Steve
Great haircut, Steve!
Thanks Brendan… still got it!
