ELLROY READS – Laura by Vera Caspary

November 10, 2024

For the latest episode of Ellroy Reads I look at Vera Caspary’s classic novel Laura, the exemplary film noir adaptation it inspired, and how both the novel and film inspired James Ellroy’s abortive plans for a remake.

I hope you enjoy the episode. As always dear viewer, let me know your thoughts.

Interesting about the London setting for Ellroy’s screenplay. Years ago I had read an article giving it a modern day setting in Chicago. In another interview Ellroy mentioned wanting to do a Scotland Yard script but was concerned about getting the terminology right.

Any chance of an episode on another planned script based on a book, the Sidney Korshak bio based on Gus Russo’s Super Mob book?

Chicago would be interesting as it was Caspary’s hometown. I’ve got an episode in the pipeline about John Creasey’s Gideon series which ties in with Ellroy’s Scotland Yard interest quite nicely. May do one on Korshak as well. I’m in for the long run with this series, but the episodes may appear in a somewhat random order.
