Ellroy Reads – The Black Echo by Michael Connelly
August 10, 2025
For the latest episode of Ellroy Reads, I look at the birth of a publishing sensation by examining the success behind Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch series. The Bosch series, and Connelly’s career, share many parallels with the life and work of James Ellroy.
It’s a cracking episode, dear viewer. Subscribe for more episodes delivered directly to your inbox.

Turns out I had a copy of The Black Echo for years that I didn’t read until earlier this summer. I’ve been a fan of the Bosch tv series but was hesitant about getting into the novels. I was blown away by the book and now on book seven and counting.
I also watched the TV series first. I feel guilty if I enjoy and then don’t go back and read the book it was based on. So glad I did as Connelly is such a good writer.
Did Ellroy mention the specific Connelly books he read and any thoughts on them?
Bosch:Legacy isn’t quite as good as the original tv series, but in a lot of ways it’s really a continuation than a true spinoff. Still enjoyable and you do get appearances from the LAPD crew.
I just finished the new Ballard tv series. This is more of a true spinoff- Bosch is relegated to guest appearances in three episodes. The tone at times is more comedic and the regulars are a network TV cast of quirky misfits, but by end I actually was hooked on the two main storylines.
No he didn’t, just that he was reading him. I met give the spinoffs a try. I’m sure they are very good, but I feel it would been better to give Bosch a really strong ending rather than reduce him to a supporting or cameo player. However, I see how that suits Connelly’s canvas vision.
