Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates, reviewed for Ellroy Reads

September 20, 2026

Some books need little introduction. Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates is one of them. It’s an epic and controversial take on the life of Marilyn Monroe, as poetic as it is gut-wrencing.

In the latest episode of Ellroy Reads I discuss the novel, and how it influenced James Ellroy’s portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in The Enchanters. I also discuss the background to Oates’ description of Ellroy as ‘the American Dostoyevsky’. Enjoy the show, and do remember to subscribe to the channel, like, share and comment on the content.
